The Safe House Gastropub at HSR Layout in Bengaluru is an attempt at creating a safe haven for all those who would indulge in a weekly unwind. A prominent entrance façade which is designed as a gabion wall bearing the signage ‘SAFE HOUSE’ boldly, the pub is hard to miss if you are in the neighbourhood. Once inside, a ‘pattern’ lighting lends a warm ambience to the collage of spaces that define the corners distinctly. Lighting fixtures made of upcycled pipes, pulleys and cycle rims cast impressions dramatizing the surfaces just a notch more. The overall palette is rustic and rugged with grit finishes, and rope weaves are used for ceilings and as partitions- avoiding the use of solid walls and providing visual interaction between sections of the interior space. Bespoke furniture and planters outline the corners and help in defining areas. A blue and grey floor finish was cast on-site in cement in a custom hexagonal pattern.

Designed as a space for a demographic that is as diverse as the world, Safe House executes multiple techniques with a wide material palette in good taste. While the overall ambience exudes the same warmth, the place has quirks that may appeal to many. In the midst of the chaos of another kind, it is possible to find a corner to retreat and still find a spotlight to shine in.
